Just released from prison after serving three years for murdering a member of a rival gang, Maraki, a middle-aged yakuza, returns to his old haunts in Tokyo largely out of loyalties despite not much liking that life or himself in the process. Those old routines include assuming his place within the Funada gang, reconnecting with Shinko, his twenty-three year old girlfriend, who wants a commitment from him (something he probably isn't willing to give), she threatening to accept another marriage proposal otherwise despite her love for him, and gambling at his usual illegal card den despite he not often winning. Although at first glance he thinks nothing has changed in three years, there are some major changes, especially that the Funada gang has merged with that rival gang partly to maintain the peace. One other change is that an innocent looking, young, upscale woman, Saeko, she the only female, has started gambling at that same card den, that innocent look beyond the fact that she likes to play big. He becomes her mentor and protector of sorts in he introducing her to an illegal card den with higher stakes, which is what she is seeking. In spending more and more time with her and in a chance encounter, Maraki not only begins to understand Saeko in she not being the total innocent her may have first assumed, especially in her curiosity with Yoh, the seeming drug addict cowering in the corner of the card den, but evaluates his ritualized life in the process.—Huggo

Yukiko is a middle aged geisha working at the Bel Ami bar in the Ginza district of Tokyo. She is the single mother of young adolescent Haruo, the product of a liaison with a former customer who she thought was going to be the love of her life, but who walked out on her when he found out she was pregnant. When Yukiko is working, she usually gets Kyôko, one of her younger colleagues, to look after Haruo, that is whenever she isn't letting Haruo run loose on the streets. Haruo knows the routine that he is not to return home if he sees men's shoes outside the door, they usually belonging to married Mr. Fujimura. Yukiko feels she owes Fujimura who helped her when she was pregnant, but in reality she has long paid Fujimura what support he has provided her. She evaluates her life and future as a geisha as the men in her life seem increasingly to take advantage of her good nature and as her boss contemplates selling the bar. She contemplates whether happiness is too late for her to achieve, either in security for her and Haruo, and/or in true love, which she knows cannot or will not happen with anyone she meets at work as history has shown and as customers will have a certain expectation of her as a geisha.—Huggo

Elderly couple Shukishi and Tomi Hirayama live in the small coastal village of Onomichi, Japan with their youngest daughter, schoolteacher Kyoko Hirayama. Their other three surviving adult children, who they have not seen in quite some time, live either in Tokyo or Osaka. As such, Shukishi and Tomi make the unilateral decision to have an extended visit in Tokyo with their children, pediatrician Koichi Hirayama and beautician Shige Kaneko, and their respective families (which includes two grandchildren). In transit, they make an unexpected stop in Osaka and stay with their other son, Keiso Hirayama. All of their children treat the visit more as an obligation than a want, each trying to figure out what to do with their parents while they continue on with their own daily lives. At one point, they even decide to ship their parents off to an inexpensive resort at Atami Hot Springs rather than spend time with them. The only offspring who makes a concerted effort on this trip is Noriko Hirayama, their widowed daughter-in-law, whose husband, Shoji Hirayama, was killed eight years earlier in the war. Following the vacation, each child comes to some conclusion of their general behavior toward their parents, not only on this trip but throughout their entire adult lives.
