In the small town of Corinth, New Hampshire, adult siblings Hester, Harry and Lettie are the elder generation of the Quincey family, they still living together in the family home. While their family was among the town founders, they, like many, lost most of their wealth during the depression, they only being able to keep the house. Harry, the household breadwinner in being a designer at the town's textile mill, is caught in the middle between the continuing squabbles of the three women of the household: widowed Hester still wants to feel useful around the house; Nona, their longtime housekeeper, will not tolerate any interference, especially by Hester, in what she sees as her responsibilities, including overseeing Harry's diet; and frail Lettie largely tends to her garden and reads poetry in the green room when not doting on Harry. In reality, Lettie, strong and strong-minded, is the manipulative one, mostly doing what it takes so that Harry will never leave her. Her manipulation has largely led to Harry being a milquetoast, unable or unwilling to think for himself. Things change when Deborah Brown arrives in town, she also working for the textile company in the New York City head office. Harry is immediately attracted to her, and while she attracts the attention of a few men in town, it isn't until Harry seems like he could lose her that he confesses his love and asks her to marry him, the proposal which she accepts. This move does not sit well with Lettie, who will not let another woman take Harry away from her without a fight. Harry's response, the measure which he takes when he learns of something Lettie did unilaterally affecting their household, does not turn out quite as expected, leading to all the players turning to their proverbial Plan B to get to their desired end goal.—Huggo

Prior to the United States entry into World War II, Nazi spies try to steal American military secrets. When Schneider's contact is arrested in Scotland, the US military asks the FBI to root out the spies. Two nobles in particular, Sir Giles Amaury (Robert Douglas) and Conrad, Marquis of Montferrat (Michael Pate), want to eliminate the English King and attempt to have him assassinated. Severely wounded and on his death bed, Richard is brought back to health by a Saracen doctor recruited by one of his loyal knights, Sir Kenneth of the Leopard (Laurence Harvey). The Germans have just invaded and are now occupying another town in an Allied country in western Europe and the German district commandant is Major Erich von Keller (Walter Slezak). Like other such occupied towns, the Germans are keeping it a supposed free city in return for citizen cooperation. Some of the town's leading citizens, such as Mayor Henry Manville (Thurston Hall) and the railway station master George Lambert (George Sanders), encourage citizen cooperation outwardly to maintain peace, while such persons are able to profit individually in being in Von Keller's proverbial back pocket. Paul Martin (Kent Smith), a railway switch-man and George's best friend, has gone even further by befriending occupying German soldiers. On the other side, the school headmaster, well-respected Professor Sorel (Philip Merivale), and young schoolteacher Louise Martin (Maureen O'Hara), Paul's sister and George's fiancée, openly but quietly resist although do not totally defy German orders. Louise's fellow schoolteacher, middle-aged Albert Lory (Charles Laughton), is a timid man, his self-admitted cowardice exacerbated by his overbearing mother, Emma Lory (Una O'Connor). Coddling him, she in return expects that he will never leave her. Albert is secretly in love with Louise, which most in town know, it being more of a joke to them than anything as they know he will never admit such in his cowardice. Someone or some faction in town has been clandestinely printing and distributing anti-German leaflets. In addition, an act of sabotage at the railway yard which was intended to thwart the Germans resulted in two German soldiers being killed. As such, Von Keller is determined to find out the person or people behind these acts. If he is unable, he will not hesitate to imprison and execute innocent people to make them examples to the townsfolk. When the supposed saboteur is discovered and shot by the Germans, Albert gets caught in the middle, and his life is on the line. In this situation, the townsfolk may get a true picture of what it means to be a coward or a hero.—Huggo

The 24th Academy Awards honored the best in film in 1951, as recognized by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Best Picture was awarded to An American in Paris, which, like A Place in the Sun, received six Academy Awards. A Streetcar Named Desire won four Oscars, including three of the acting awards. The film's only unsuccessful acting nomination was that of Marlon Brando, whose performance as Stanley Kowalski was later considered one of the most influential of modern film acting. Humphrey Bogart was the last man born in the 19th century to win a leading role Oscar. George Harvey Bone is a composer in early 20th century London, who is under stress because he is writing a piano concerto. Due to this stress, he gets black outs whenever he hears dissonances. When he finds himself after the black out in a different quarter of the town, he returns home, to read in the paper that somebody in that quarter was murdered. Asking help from a doctor at Scotland Yard he is assured that he has nothing to do with it, but he is advised to cut back in his work and get some relaxation like other, ordinary people. At a cheap musical he meets Netta, a singer, who inspires him for a new motif for his concerto. But Netta discovers that this motif could also be used as a song for her. The song gets sold, and she hangs around George to get more songs out of him. George believes that Netta is in love with him, and gets in an argument with his girlfriend Barbara, the daughter of Lord Henry, who wants the concerto for one of his soirées. George has another black out, and after recovering he hears that Barbara was almost strangled to death. He starts working again on the concerto. On London's special holiday he learns that Netta, who offered him quite a lot for a new song, is going to marry theatrical producer Carstair, and he causes some violins to fall in his room, and this sound drives him to another black out.—Stephan Eichenberg
