Paul Boray comes from a working class background. He has been interested in the violin since he was a child, which his father disliked since he felt it a waste of money, but which his mother supported. Into his adult life, Paul wants to become a concert violinist, and although he shows talent, he does not have the right connections to make it into the concert performance world, much like his longtime friend, virtuoso pianist Sid Jeffers, and cellist Gina, both who, like Paul, train with the National Institute Orchestra. Gina and Paul have a connection with each other, Gina who confesses her love for him. While performing at a party with Sid, Paul meets Helen and Victor Wright, their hosts. Victor is a perceptive but self-admittedly weak man, while his wife Helen is strong minded but insecure which manifests itself as neurosis. She constantly tries to forget about her unhappy life by excessive alcohol consumption. Helen becomes Paul's benefactress, which ultimately results in a successful concert career for Paul. But the two also fall in love, a destructive love against the wishes of Paul's mother and Gina. That love may not only destroy Paul's concert career, but their lives as well.—Huggo

Alonzo is an armless knife thrower and gun shooter for a circus---or so he appears. He is actually a criminal with his arms intact. He and his accomplice, Cojo (a little person), are hiding from the police. Alonzo views his disguise as perfect, especially since it keeps from view an unusual deformity of his left hand that would immediately give him away as the criminal the police are searching for. Nanon, the daughter of Zanzi, the circus owner, is the target in his act. Although Alonzo is in love with her, Nanon's father despises him. Malabar, the circus strong man, is attracted to Nanon but she is repulsed by his uninhibited sexual advances and desire to touch and hold her. Her phobia extends to the touch of any man's hand. Alonzo feeds her fears in the hopes that Nanon will fall in love with him since he is "armless". Because Zanzi discovers Alonzo really has arms, Alonzo kills him, but Nanon witnesses the killing without seeing Alonzo's face; however, she does see the telltale deformity of his left hand. As Alonzo continues to plot to steal Nanon away from Malabar, Cojo makes him realize that she will hate him once she discovers he has arms---and the deformity showing that he is her father's murderer. Alonzo decides to have both his arms amputated, which he succeeds in doing through blackmailing a surgeon. While Alonzo is away recuperating from the surgery, Nanon gets over her fear of being touched and falls completely in love with Malabar. Discovering this upon his return, Alonzo hatches a scheme to kill Malabar as he attempts his latest, most dangerous stunt.—Patrick Robbins

New York after World War 2 is challenging for Manhattan commercial artist Daisy Kenyon (Joan Crawford) who is still struggling to establish her career, difficult for her now that she's hit 40, but also because she is single and sustaining a long-term adulterous relationship with married lawyer Dan O'Mara (Dana Andrews) who takes Daisy and his own wife Lucille (Ruth Warrick) and his success for granted. When Daisy begins seeing emotionally damaged, ex-soldier Peter Lapham (Henry Fonda) she feels it's only casual but when Peter, so different from boyfriend O'Mara, shows sincere interest in marriage Daisy can only consider the opportunity seriously. Daisy marries Peter out of real affection but still longs for Dan, partly because the lawyer has shown a sensitive side by taking a pro bono case to help a Japanese American try to get back his land that was taken away as a result of the reactions to the Japanese involvement in World War 2. Dan comes to Daisy and declares his love for her, him but Lucille learns of their relationship and sues Dan for a divorce. As the three are dragged through litigation Dan proposes that he and Peter and Daisy together decide what is important to them and find a resolution to the mess their lives have become.
