The intertwined stories of a group of Angelenos are told, the stories largely a lament of Los Angeles being a city not their own, if it ever was. The stories are also split largely by the Black/white race divide. Centered on the Black side is Simon, a widowed tow-truck driver with a deaf daughter away at college. Simon has an understanding of the gang violence that surrounds his neighborhood, especially as his teenage nephew Otis--Simon's single-mother sister Deborah's eldest offspring--is part of a gang, believing that he must in order to survive in the short-term, regardless of the consequences. Centered on the white side is Mack, an immigration lawyer who acts largely on impulse only thinking of the implications of his actions after the fact, if at all. He also has an unconscious need to be liked. An example of this is something he does for Jane, a friend of his paralegal Dee, only seconds after he first meets her. Dee understands his actions but doesn't like them. Mack's wife Claire is at a crossroads in life; their 15-year-old son Roberto needs his parents less and less. What Claire sees as a sign to renew her life is only the most visible issue in a long line of issues that demonstrate the unspoken problems in their marriage. The one person whose story is told that is somewhat outside of this lament is Mack's best friend Davis, a successful producer whose movies, as per his want, must have the "money shot" of the proverbial and literal head exploding in whatever violent action.—Huggo

Ray Sheridan is a Texas Ranger working in the insurance fraud division. From a devout Catholic family, seventeen year old Jorge lives in a Mexico City slum neighborhood with his mother and his thirteen year old sister Adriana. To have a better life not only for himself but also his family, Jorge, with two of his friends, has resorted to a "violent" scam to steal money from tourists in the Zocolo, something he hasn't told his mother who would disapprove. Ray and Jorge's very different existences intersect on a chance meeting straddling the border at El Paso/Juarez in dealing with the same issue from two slightly different directions, that issue being sex trafficking. Ray has been using his professional position on a personal mission of locating his illegitimate daughter Carly, who he has never met and who he has just learned was sold by her junkie mother ten years ago, he assuming into the illegal sex trade. With Adriana having gone missing, Jorge eventually learned that the assumption made by his criminal acquaintance Don Victor based on the evidence that Adriana was kidnapped by a Russian led sex trafficking group is true in Jorge having eventually been able to follow the kidnappers' path to Juarez. Adriana is one of four being transported across the border into the US, those four including Veronica, a young Polish woman whose "travel service" back home advised in going through Mexico as an easier entrance into the US where she hoped to eke out a better life eventually to be able to bring her son, Gregor. Veronica has taken it upon herself to be the defiant one to protect the other three, including Adriana. While Ray and Jorge work on two different mentalities - Ray more methodical with Jorge running more on adrenaline - the two have to decide how to approach the issue when they discover that the kidnappers' ultimate destination is New Jersey, where Adriana will be involved in an online auction in the highly lucrative position of the auction as the virgin.—Huggo

A native daughter whose family has lived there for three centuries, Hildy Good was once the most successful realtor in Wendover, MA, a quaint and now largely upper middle class coastal village, and one of the most successful small business owners on the North Shore, that was before among others Scott, her now out gay ex-husband, and their two young adult daughters, Tess and Emily, held an intervention that sent her to rehab for a drinking problem, something that Hildy does not admit that she had, especially in comparison to her long deceased mother. Coming out of rehab, Hildy drinks on the sly, she countering her now admitted drinking problem, which she doesn't see as much of a problem, a result of rehab, does not attend therapy or AA meetings, and is having financial problems in her real estate company being in a free fall in most business in town having been taken over by her former associate Wendy Heatherton, who stole her client list when Hildy was in rehab, although Hildy puts on a false front of not having any financial issues in she still largely offering financial support to Tess and Emily when they need it. In having sold her the house in which she and her young family live, Hildy develops a friendship with Rebecca McAllister, a lonely and needy woman new to town, that friendship for Hildy in Rebecca not only not judging her drinking, but partaking in it with her in their private time together. That neediness for Rebecca has resulted in her having an affair with married psychiatrist Peter Newbold, she once a patient of his. Peter has asked Hildy, who used to babysit him when he was a child, not to divulge that he has asked her possibly to sell his house if an out-of-town job comes through, Hildy taking from that that Peter's own marriage is in trouble. And despite her own troubles, Hildy offers her services to struggling Cassie and Patch Dwight to prepare their house for sale in they not having the funds to do so in all their attention, financial or otherwise, directed toward their autistic son, Jake Dwight. With the Dwights' house, Hildy asks another native son, Frank Getchell, owner of his own maintenance company, to assist despite Frankie being already stretched to the limit with work. In that process, Hildy contemplates starting something with Frankie, her high school crush, who may provide some stability that she needs in life.—Huggo

Focusing largely on her career including being the first bona fide female rock star, the life of Linda Ronstadt is presented. That path from her upbringing outside of Tucson, Arizona with European and Mexican heritage to that stardom having moved to Los Angeles to pursue that singing career is shown, with commentary not only from her own lips, but that of many of her contemporaries who were also emerging at the same time. Her own sensibilities as a woman in a profession dominated by men affected not only the way she acted within that environment, but also impacted the face of rock music especially as it related to women. Her move out of rock music to other genres in getting back to other types of music with which she grew up is also presented, she being told told time and time again that such moves would ruin her career, but the contrary eventually happening with she and the music with each move being met with critical acclaim and popular appeal. These genres included light operetta in the form of Gilbert and Sullivan (most specifically The Pirates of Penzanze), pop standards in collaboration with Nelson Riddle, a purely country collaboration with old friend Emmylou Harris and new friend Dolly Parton, a pop music collaboration with Aaron Neville, and a recording of traditional Spanish-language Mexican folk songs. Not being a songwriter but owning whatever song she decided to sing, and the reason for her retirement in 2009, when she gave her last concert, are also discussed. They plan to leave the country with the goods after the heist. On Wanda's recommendation, they enlist the help of her weapons-expert brother Otto West (Kevin Kline) for this heist. Actually, Otto isn't Wanda's brother, but her latest lover, a dimwit who gets off on his own body odor and believes he's an intellectual because he reads Nietzsche and does not tolerate being called stupid by anyone. Wanda has one weakness in men which is how Otto was able to get her to be his lover: speaking Italian in seduction. Wanda and Otto plan to double-cross Georges by having him arrested for the heist while they abscond with the jewels. Wanda further plans to triple-cross Otto by eliminating him from the picture after she has the jewels. They are able to get Georges arrested with him not knowing who tipped the off the police, and implicated by elderly eyewitness Eileen Coady (Patricia Hayes). With Georges in jail, Wanda and Otto discover that he has protected his investment by moving the jewels from their agreed location to a hidden one, telling nobody where they are but offering Ken a slight hint. Georges gives Ken, an animal lover with an extreme stutter, the task of killing Mrs. Coady before she is able to testify against him, as she is the Crown's primary witness. Meanwhile, Wanda has her own plan to reach her end goal: seduce George's defense lawyer Archie Leach (John Cleese) and find out Georges' secrets about the heist, including the location of the jewels. Archie may be easy prey for Wanda's seduction, as his wife Wendy (Maria Aitken) is a self-absorbed woman who pays him little attention. Otto might throw a wrench into Wanda's plans if he finds out what she's doing.—Huggo
