Seven-year-old Johnny is excited about what he believes to be a vacation at his grandmother's Georgia plantation with his parents, John Sr. and Sally. When they arrive at the plantation, he discovers that his parents will be living apart for a while and he is to live in the country with his mother and grandmother while his father returns to Atlanta to continue his controversial editorship in the city's newspaper.Johnny, distraught because his father has never left him or his mother before, leaves that night under cover of darkness and sets off for Atlanta with only a bundle. As Johnny sneaks away from the plantation, he is attracted by the voice of Uncle Remus (the main character of the film), telling tales "in his old-timely way" of a character named Br'Er Rabbit.Curious, Johnny hides behind a nearby tree to spy on the group of people sitting around the fire. By this time, word has gotten out that Johnny is gone and some plantation residents, who are sent out to find him, ask if Uncle Remus has seen the boy. Uncle Remus replies that he's with him. Shortly afterwards, he catches up with Johnny, who sits crying on a nearby log. He befriends the young boy and offers him some food for the journey, taking him back to his cabin.As Uncle Remus cooks, he mentions Br'Er Rabbit again and the boy, curious, asks him to tell him more. After Uncle Remus tells a tale about Br'Er Rabbit's attempt to run away from home in which he is trapped by Br'Er Fox & is only able to escape by tricking the slow Br'Er Bear into taking his place in the Fox's trap. Johnny takes the advice and changes his mind about leaving the plantation, letting Uncle Remus take him back to his mother. Johnny makes friends with Toby, a little black boy who lives on the plantation, and Ginny Favers, a poor white neighbor.However, Ginny's two older brothers, Joe and Jake-who are meant to resemble Br'Er Fox and Br'Er Bear "a big Bubba" from Uncle Remus's stories, for one is slick and fast-talking, while the other is big and a little slow-are not friendly at all; they constantly bully Ginny and Johnny. When Ginny gives Johnny a puppy, her brothers want to drown it. A rivalry breaks out among the three boys. Heartbroken because his mother won't let him keep the puppy, Johnny takes the dog to Uncle Remus and tells him of his troubles. Uncle Remus takes the dog in and delights Johnny and his friends with the fable of Br'Er Rabbit and the Tar Baby, stressing that people shouldn't go messing around with something they have no business with in the first place.Johnny heeds the advice of how Br'Er Rabbit used reverse psychology on Br'Er Fox and begs the Favers Brothers not to tell their mother about the dog, which is precisely what they do, only to get a good spanking for it. Enraged, the boys vow revenge. They go to the plantation and tell Johnny's mother, who is upset that Uncle Remus kept the dog despite her order (which was unknown to Uncle Remus). She orders the old man not to tell any more stories to her son.The day of Johnny's birthday arrives, and Johnny picks up Ginny to take her to his party. Ginny's mother has used her wedding dress to make her daughter a beautiful dress for the party. On the way there, however, Joe and Jake pick another fight. Ginny gets pushed and ends up in a mud puddle. With her dress ruined, the upset Ginny refuses to go to the party. Johnny, enraged with the way Joe and Jake treat Ginny, attacks them. Uncle Remus breaks up the fight and while Johnny goes to comfort Ginny, Uncle Remus scolds Joe and Jake, telling them not to pester Johnny and Ginny anymore. Johnny doesn't want to go either, especially since his father won't be there. Uncle Remus discovers the two dejected children and cheers them by telling the story of Br'Er Rabbit and his "Laughing Place."When Uncle Remus returns to the plantation with the children, Sally meets them on the way and is angry at Johnny for not having attended his own birthday party. Ginny mentions that Uncle Remus told them a story and Sally draws a line, warning him not to spend any more time with Johnny. Uncle Remus, saddened by the misunderstanding of his good intentions, packs his bags and leaves for Atlanta. Seeing Uncle Remus leaving from a distance, Johnny rushes to intercept him, taking a shortcut through the pasture, where he is attacked and seriously injured by the resident bull. While Johnny hovers between life and death, his father returns and reconciles with Sally. But Johnny calls for Uncle Remus, who has returned in the middle of all the commotion. Uncle Remus begins telling a tale of Br'Er Rabbit and the Laughing Place, and the boy miraculously survives.Johnny, Ginny, and Toby are next seen skipping along and singing "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" while Johnny's returned puppy runs alongside them. Uncle Remus is also in the vicinity, and he is shocked when Br'Er Rabbit and several of the other characters from his stories appear in front of them and interact with the children. Uncle Remus breaks the fourth wall as he rushes to join the group. The entire group skips away, with a reprise of the opening theme.

Coy (Carmelo Gómez) está en Madrid, sin un duro. Pronto averiguaremos que es un marino que no puede navegar durante dos años. Al no tener dinero, se va a ver una subasta pública de elementos relacionados con el mar. Allí, ve como Tánger Soto (Aitana Sánchez-Gijón) compra una carta esférica muy antigua, dibujada por Urrutia. Ella es funcionaria del Museo Naval, y hace uso del derecho de tanteo para conseguir esa carta por 50.000 euros. A la salida, Coy la defiende de los otros dos pujadores interesados en conseguir la carta. Uno de ellos es un Argentino (Darío Grandinetti). A la salida, Coy ve como el Argentino le está echando en cara el suceso a Tánger con un gesto agresivo. Coy sale en defensa de la chica. Por eso, Tánger lo invita a tomar algo.Quedan para más tarde. Ella le enseña el museo y le habla de su trabajo. Le dice que estaba ilusionada por buscar el Day Gloria, un barco hundido del siglo 16, y quiere usar la carta de Urrutia para calcular la zona del hundimiento. A primera vista, Coy detecta que hay un desfase de varios grados entre la carta y la readidad de la geografía de la bahía de Cartagena, ya que él fue niño, se crió allí, y nadó y buceó por esa zona muchas veces. Tánger le ofrece un trabajo. El museo le ofrecerá un poco de dinero, suficiente para realizar la investigación en pos del barco hundido. Aunque depende de la Armada española y podría utilizar a los militares, Tánger prefiere utilizar a alguien que ella podría controlar. Coy acepta.El trabajo sale adelante poco a poco, pero Coy se frustra porque Tánger no responde a sus requerimientos amorosos. Llega un momento en que él decide irse. Nada más hacerlo, se va a un bar a emborracharse. Nino Palermo (Enrico Lo Verso) es el dueño de una empresa que se dedica a buscar tesoros, y le ofrece a Coy mucho dinero a cambio de trabajar para ellos. Coy lo rechaza.Cuando Coy regresa a casa de Tánger, alguien ha revuelto toda su casa y ahogado al perro de ella, Milú, llamado así en honor del perro de Tintín. Decididos a buscar el Day Gloria, Coy recomienda a Piloto (Javier García Gallego), quien tiene mucha experiencia y su propio barco. Tánger le dice a Coy que puede quedarse a dormir... en el sofá, y él no se decide a entrar en el dormitorio de ella.Al día siguiente, Coy llama a Palermo y queda con él. Éste lo espera en el vestíbulo de un hotel todo satisfecho. Coy le gospea pero el secuaz de Palermo, Horacio Kiskoros, (Gonzalo Cunill), le axfisia y lo deja allí tirado. Cuando Coy sale del calabozo dos días después, él y Tánger se van a Cádiz.Allí, Coy sigue insinuándose a "la sirena", que nunca le dice claramente si quiere algo con él o no. Tánger acude a una amiga suya llamada Rocío Gamboa (Lucina Gil) para pedirle los planos del Day Gloria. Ella le dice que un italiano preguntó por ellos hace un mes. Al salir del registro, Kiskoros los está esperando. Tánger insiste en hablar con él a solas, mientras Coy espera furioso... y celoso. Kiskoros propone que Tánger y Palermo se encuentren en la oficina de Gibraltar de él. Tánger avisa a Coy de que tenga cuidado con Kiskoros, porque él fue quien mató a Milú.En Gibraltar, es Coy quien se enfrenta al amenazante Palermo. Aún así, quedan al día siguiente a las dos. Éste le dice que Tánger lo está utilizando, y le pide que le pregunte por las esmeraldas. Cuando Coy llega enfadadísimo a la habitación del hotel, Tánger lo acusa de traicionarla con Palermo. En la bronca que sigue, Coy le dice que está enferma de desconfianza, y que se puede meter las esmeraldas donde le quepan. Sin embargo, Tánger lo convence de quedarse con ella, y le cuenta la leyenda de las esmeraldas.Tánger le pide disculpas. Coy, Palermo, Tánger y Kiskoros se reunen. No llegan a un acuerdo de repartirse las esmeraldas. Palermo le dice a Coy que Tánger lo tiene pillado por los huevos y éste le pega furioso. Cuando Kiskoros sale en defensa de su jefe, Tánger saca una pistola. Amenazándoles, les tira por el peñón las llaves de su coche, mientras ella y Coy se van a buscar el Day Gloria en el barco de Piloto.Tánger se marea terriblemente en el barco, y vomita por la borda. Después, Tánger decide tirar la pistola por la borda. Piloto dice a Coy que ningún pescador ha visto nunca un barco abandonado por la zona, y todos se conocen la zona como el pasillo de su propia casa. Como excusa para estar buscando algo en la zona van a decir que una pareja de novios está buscando el motor de una fueraborda. En un momento solos, Piloto le pregunta a Coy si está seguro de lo que hace.Tánger compra todo el equipo. Después de cuatro días, no encuentran nada. Ocho días, y nada. Una tormenta rompe, y nada.Hablan en un bar del pasado de Coy y del Torpedero Tucanmán, un marino al que Coy admiraba. Coy sorprende a Kiskoros espiándoles. Kiskoros le dice que Coy se equivoca con Palermo y Tánger: ni él es malo ni ella es buena. Tánger ve la pelea. En lugar de defenderse de las acusaciones de Kiskoros, ella se lanza por fin a besar a Coy y acaban haciendo el amor.Ocho días más tarde no encuentran nada. Puede ser que el Day Gloria esté enterrado después de tantos años, o que las corrientes lo hayan arrastrado a algún otro sitio. Tánger piensa que están cometiendo algún error en la búsqueda. Coy le dice que hasta ahora han tenido suerte con la Guardia Civil, pero que eso podría cambiar en cualquier momento. Al final, Tánger tiene que dar por finalizada la búsqueda. Cuando Piloto se va a casa, deja a Coy y Tánger abrazados como si fueran una pareja de enamorados y un poco borrachos. Hacen el amor furiosamente en la bañera de la habitación de hotel.Tánger quiere seguir buscando en tierra firme información sobre el barco. Hablan con el catedrático de cartografía Esteban Perona (Carlos Kaniowsky). Perona y Tánger ya se conocían de cuando ella estuvo haciendo otra búsqueda en Grecia. Perona se ríe cuando ella le dice que buscan un barco jesuita. Perona le dice que los jesuitas usaban no el meridiano de Cádiz, sino su propio meridiano, 38 millas al oeste. Al despedirse, Perona le dice a Tánger que hacía una semana su marido lo había visitado, aunque él no lo había recibido. Enseguida, Coy se da cuenta de que el ex-marido es Nino Palermo, y vuelve a cabrearse mucho, hasta el punto de que se pone a gritar en la universidad.La búsqueda se reinicia con Piloto en el nuevo emplazamiento. Parece que no va a volver a haber buenos resultados otra vez hasta que Piloto menciona unas langostas verdes que se dan en la zona. Tánger le dice que las langostas tienen propiedades miméticas, y que pueden estar viviendo cerca de los cañones. Hay muchas cuevas submarinas, y poco a poco Coy las va recorriendo todas en su traje de buzo. Por fin encuentra el pecio Day Gloria, con su nombre escrito claramente en uno de los cañones.Sale del agua y les da la buena noticia. Cuando lo están celebrando, se acerca una lancha de la Guardia Civil. Piloto se deshace de ellos.Una vez en tierra, Tánger recibe varias llamadas equivocadas.
Se va, y por la noche, Coy vuelve a ver a Kiskoros. Lo persigue pero no lo da atrapado. Una vez juntos a la noche, Coy piensa que Tánger lo está engañanado una vez más, ocultándole algo. Al día siguiente, Tánger insiste en sumergirse los dos juntos, no en turnos como hasta entonces. Piloto y Coy bajan hasta el barco hundido y por medio de globos, elevan unas piedras. Allí Tánger encuentra por fin las esmeraldas mezcladas con tierra y barro. Tánger las limpia y no se cansa de mirarlas. Coy ve como las esconde dentro de una de las linternas de inmersión. Con calma, regresan a tierra. Coy está pensativo y Piloto lo observa en silencio. A punto de atracar, Tánger manda a Piloto atracar en un sitio más discreto, en el muelle de San Pedro. Coy ve como Tánger habla por teléfono. Como regalo de despedida, le deja su diario encima de la cama. Al tocar tierra, aparecen Palermo y Kiskoros. Palermo quiere hacerse cargo de las esmeraldas. Sin embargo, en el último momento, se percibe que Kiskoros y Tánger estaban de acuerdo. Kiskoros se queda vigilándoles con una pistola. Tánger ha pedido seis horas a Kiskoros. Coy y Palermo intentan crear la duda en él. Coy tira fuego a Kiskoros, que muere en una hoguera. Palermo está herido por la pistola de Kiskoros, pero éste le dice a Coy que no pierda tiempo y que vaya a por ella. Piloto y Coy van a la habitación y se encuentran en el espejo, escrito con carmín "En la isla no hay caballeros". Una vez en el barco de salida, Tánger lee el final del diario: Coy sabe que ella volverá con él mientras él tenga lo que ella busca. Asustada, Tánger abre la linterna y la encuentra llena de cantos rodados. Se ríe sola. Mientras, Coy y Piloto se pierden en la noche. Coy le dice que le pagará a Piloto el barco nuevo que Tánger le prometió. Piloto le pregunta si él cree que ella volverá, y él le dice que se apuesta lo que sea a que sí.
