In a Dixie small-town, the late Sheriff was quite content to preside over a truly segregated community. There the rich brothers, Harlan and Mason Davis, are lords. Tomokawa is a tough guy turned bored cop who spends much of his time sating lonely housewives and looking after retarded teen Sukemasa. One day while hanging out at a bar, he is approached by a 15-year-old enjo kosai named Yoko, offering a round of illicit sex in exchange for cash. Though he demurs, their paths cross again and soon a relationship of sorts forms. Yoko, it turns out, is Sukemasa's sister; and both are the children of his old flame Yukie, a grasping, self-centered woman. Yoko's grandfather is responsible for the massive tattoo sprawling across Tomokawa's back. Tomokawa soon takes both teens under his wing, protecting them from their heartless mother, and their lecherous stepfather. Should Radiohead play their Tel Aviv concert that has become a watershed event among the community of their fans, or should they support and eventually help the boycott promoted by the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) Movement? Plagued by anguish after having signed a petition asking Thom Yorke's band not to play in Israel, the signer decides to drop a call to a Palestinian friend living in London. Answering the tortured questions of his faraway friend at the other end of the phone, he ironically seems to shrug off most of the concerns, minimizing the other's anxieties. But as the conversation goes on, the political temperature rises, and the conversation becomes more focused. A debate ensues about what it means being Palestinian, how signing a petition may get you in the cross-hairs of different control systems and the effectiveness of today's political actions. A film based on a very simple idea but executed in an extremely precise way. Towards the end of the Second World War, Dr Ludwig Guttmann, a brisk refugee from Nazi Germany, arrives at Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire and is appalled to find the partially paralysed spinal patients heavily sedated and left to rot with bed sores. He immediately begins a new regime, disposing of old equipment and sedatives, bringing him into conflict with stern Sister Edwards and pompous consultant Cowan, as well as the patients. However the sister backs him when she realises he is treating her charges as people, not patients, talking to them and involving them in musical entertainments and sporting activity. Soon Whitehall are sending him all their spinal patients and, with visits to the pub and wheelchair sports taught by an army sergeant, he becomes the men's hero. With the war over Ludwig organizes national wheelchair sports competitions which will in turn lead to the establishment of the Paralympic games. An end title informs that in 1966, now a British citizen, Dr Guttmann was knighted for his part in bringing hope to the hopeless.—don @ minifie-1
