The Yoshi family - husband and wife Kennesuke and Haha, a middle manager at an office and a housewife respectively, and their two adolescent sons Keiji and Ryoichi - have just moved from the inner city to the suburbs of Tokyo, into the same neighborhood where Kennesuke's boss, Iwasaki, and his family live. The boys get off to a rocky start in their new neighborhood as they end up being bullied by a group of similarly aged boys, led by slightly bigger Kamekichi. Keiji and Ryoichi even secretly play hooky from school, not wanting to have to confront the bullies. After befriending Kozou, the older delivery boy at the local store who ends up being their protector of sorts, Keiji and Ryoichi are able to stand up to their tormentors to become the ones among the boys who call the shots. Their newfound pride takes a hit when they end up being at the same social gathering as their father and his coworkers at Iwasaki's house, and see that their father is a proverbial apple-polisher toward Iwasaki and not the important man they previously believed him to be. Kennesuke knows how his behavior looks to his sons, but justifies it to himself by probably being further ahead in life than they would be otherwise. The Yoshis will have to reconcile these two issues for harmony to return within their family.—Huggo

In 1934, Paris, Marie Curie (Rosamund Pike), collapses in her lab.
Marie met Pierre Curie (Sam Riley) in 1894 at a random street when she ran into him and Pierre saw her book and saw she is interested in radioactivity.Marie is a professor at a French university and shares lab space with Gabriel Lippmann (Simon Russell Beale). But she is not respected as she is a female and Polish, and her experiments and lab equipment are constantly moved without her agreement. Marie's sister advises her to apologize, but Marie is stubborn and wont.Marie runs into Pierre again at the theatre and is shocked to know that Pierre knows her name (she is one of the only 23 female scientists in Paris, has read her paper on magnetic properties of steel, and has heard of her fight with Lippmann). Pierre is a renowned scientist and offers his lab for experiments to Marie. She is insistent that she wont be Pierre's mistress and wont accept interference in her experiments.
Soon, she figures that the Uranium Ore is more potent than the element itself and theorizes the existence of a new element. Marie is afraid of hospitals as her mother died in one and doesn't accompany Pierre to the Paris hospital for an equipment that will help them identify elements in microscopic quantities.Marie theorizes that Uranium atoms are giving off some sort of energy and transforming into a new element. Up till that point, the uranium effect was considered a chemical reaction with the air. Soon, Pierre married Marie. Paul Langevin (Aneurin Barnard) is their lab associate. She continues her experiments with more bigger quantities of Uranium Ore. soon, she is preggers. She gives birth to Irene Curie (Anya Taylor-Joy).
Soon, Marie and Pierre are able to isolate a pin-prick of Radium & Polonium from 4 tonnes of uranium ore. Marie also coins the term "Radioactivity" for the rays coming from these "unstable" atoms.The results are accepted by the scientific community and Pierre makes professor at a prestigious university. Marie is preggers again. She sleeps with a vial of radium in her bed and soon Pierre falls sick. Pierre convinces Marie not to patent Radium so people can discover the possibilities of their new science. Marie sees radium being used for X rays and even as a possible cure for cancer.
Pierre develops a bad rash on his wrist from exposure to radium and Marie is preggers again. Ève Curie (Cara Bossom) is born.
In 1903 Marie and Pierre win the Nobel prize for discovery of radioactivity. Pierre talks about the dangers of radioactivity (which ultimately lead to the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima in 1945). Marie is super angry at Pierre for going to the ceremony alone (Marie had just given birth) and she thinks Pierre stole her brilliance and made it his own.Pierre's coughing grows and he begs Marie to leave Paris, but she wont budge. Pierre has a coughing fit on the street and runs into a horse carriage and is crushed underneath. Marie is inconsolable. Marie is offered Pierre's job at the university, but she declines at first. Paul advises her to accept Pierre's death and move on. She starts teaching at the university.
Rumors start appearing that radium is making people sick. Marie is defenseless and starts an affair with a considerate Paul. A few months later Paul confirms studies that have linked Radioactivity as the source of cancer. Soon, Paul's wife releases details of their scandal to the press and Marie is disgraced and asked to leave France. Paul leaves Marie under threat from his own wife.The movie talks about other effects of radiation, such as ever powerful nuclear weapons, cure for cancer and then the explosion at Chernobyl. Marie wins the Nobel prize again in 1911 for chemistry. She goes to Sweden for her acceptance speech and is applauded for her work. Irene grows up and is a nurse in WW1. she asks her mother to make the war her own war and do something about it.
Marie approaches Lippmann for funds to device a mobile x ray unit that could determine if troops need amputation at the fronts, before their limbs are chopped off. Marie advises Irene to stay away from radiation as its effects are not fully understood yet. Lippmann again denies Marie, but this she threatens to go to the press and sell her pure gold Nobel medals to raise funds for her machines. She gets her funding.
The machines work and start savings lives and limbs on the battlefield. She died on July 4, 1934 and was buried next to Pierre. Irene went on to win the Nobel prize with her husband for discovery of artificial radioactivity. In France, to this day, radioactive treatment is called Curietherapie.

Ben goes to visit his father, Liam, in a little coastal town. He got a plaster on his left arm, but it does not keep him from working with his father on a marina. There she meets Mallory, and they connect since the beginning. Ben's house is next to a young couple. Her neighbor, Abby, and his son, Dillon, go hiking and the boy sees something strange. A tree with a hole at the bottom, and from the inside he starts hearing his mother with a creepy voice. He gets frightened, but his mother arrives and they both go home. Her husband arrives as well later with another son-a baby-and he sees in Abby's pick-up truck the legs of a dead deer dripping blood. She guts the deer with his son, but late at night a strange creature woman like emerges from the deer and starts hunting her house.The next night while Ben is on a party with Mallory the woman wakes up because her baby is crying but before entering the room he gets quiet. She lies on the bed again watching a baby TV monitor. Unknowingly to her, the creature is there watching the baby in silence, but because it is dark, she hides in the shadows next to the crib of the baby. Minutes later, Dillon comes to his parent's room to sleep with them. When the woman looks again to the TV monitor, she can not seem his baby, so she goes to the baby's room. When she arrives she sees him covered in a blanket and when she lifts the blanket the baby is not there. In his place there are a bunch of branches. Slowly, from under the crib, some gloomy substance starts to advance to her. Seconds later, the creature takes the woman from her ankles and drags her under the crib.When Ben arrives from the party late at night, he sees the woman going alone into the woods, and she seems to be carrying something in her arms. When she disappears in the darkness, Liam arrives with the car, and they have a discussion because Ben was supposed to have dinner with him and his girlfriend Sara. The next morning, Abby's husband wakes up alone in bed, and he is running late. The kid is watching TV while the creature is looking at him. At his point it is clear that the woman is not her mother anymore; she walks awkward, she stares a lot at his son and through the window, etc. That night, Sara takes home Ben from the marina as they fix things. Before leaving the marina, Ben is watching a series of pictures in a board, and he observes one with Mallory, her mother and her little sister, Lily. When Ben enters the house he hears some noises, and he is surprised when Dillon is there hidden and scared. The woman arrives and ask for her son, but Ben decides not to tell her he is there. The father arrives then, his son goes down the stairs running to him.Things go quiet until the next day, when Ben is waiting in the marina for Dillon to give him some classes, but he does not show up. Ben goes to his neighbors' house and the father opens the door. When Ben asks the father where is Dillon, he is shocked because he does not seem to recognize that he has any kids. After the conversation, he sees a symbol-some kind of inverted A-under the rug of the house of his neighbor. He performs an Internet search, and he finds pictures and texts about a black creature with bright white eyes which seems to feed on the forgotten ones and who, apparently, is able to wear people like suits. Later, he invites Mallory home, and they watch Abby getting stuff from her cellar and throwing in on the garbage can. When Ben tells Mallory everything that has been going on, before leaving, she passes a note with a picture of a witch under the door of Abby. While he has been seeing Mallory leave, the creature posing as Abby has been watching him from her house. Moments after, her husband asks her if kids has been next to the cellar door, Abby approaches him, she whispers something in his ear, and he stays there, still, bleeding from the ear.
That night, Sara is alone in the marina and the creature is observing her from outside the window. At that precise moment, Mallory arrives to lock up the office. She starts hearing noises, but she does not give it importance, so she closes the door and leaves. At the moment she leaves the place the camera shows the board, the picture of her, her mother and her sister is not there anymore. The next day, Ben goes to the cellar from where Abby emerged with a plastic bag and there he sees a series of pictures: one of the family with the kids-his neighbors-but the face of the father has been crossed out and the one with Mallory and her mother and her sister with the faces of the two firsts crossed out. He calls Mallory to ask about her sister, but Mallory does not remember having any sister. He goes to the park where Mallory and her sister are, but when he arrives the creature has already taken Lily to the woods, Ben follows her until the tree with the hole on the bottom. Nevertheless, the creature is too strong and achieves to make her disappear in the hole before Ben could hold her and get her out. When he loses grip of her, he falls backwards, and he hits the base of his skull with a stone.
When he wakes up, it is nighttime, and he goes home, but the police is there because of the trespassing of the cellar. Sara is there too and at a given moment they are alone, and he realizes that she is the creature now. They have a fight, and he cuts her with a knife, the father arrives, but the creature is already posing as Sara. The police takes Ben to the station and from inside the car he can see how Sara whispers something to the police. Before leaving, Ben tells Liam to look on the cellar. On the way to the station, Ben sees the police men bleeding from his ear. The latter stops the car to attack him, but he escapes. Liam wants to go to the station, but before leaving decides to check the cellar of Abby. There is nothing there, but when he is about to leave, he sees Abby's husband going into a room from outside the house. Liam enters a penthouse, and he founds there a sort of altar with pictures on it and the bodies of Abby and her husband dead. When he is checking one of him with her ex-wife and Ben with the three faces crossed out, the creature stabs him from behind, but he manages to escape, not before inflame the altar by accident.After a fight, Ben arrives and shoots Sara and the creature emerges from her abdomen. They get to the car while the flames start to spread burning the picture of Liam, Ben, and his mother but now there is another child in the picture. Through flashbacks a couple of scenes show that he had a little brother, the one in the picture, that was almost always present, but they have forgotten him too; in the bus at the beginning of the movie, while they take diner outside the house, etc. He tries to get Nathan, his brother, from inside the house, but the creature has already taken him to the woods. At that moment, Mallory arrives, following him to the base of the tree. He ties up himself to a tree, so he can escape, and he spreads some gasoline over the tree. Ben tells Mallory that if in ten minutes he does not come up, she must burn the tree. Inside the hole he finds Lily, Mallory's sister, and after a fight with the creature, Nathan. He manages to get them out. When everyone is outside the tree the creature emerges and takes Ben by his ankles, Mallory throw salt in the eyes of the creature and Liam arrives with his car and smashes her against the tree.The next day, Mallory is talking to a counselor, she says to her that Lily told her that they had to burn the tree, but the counselor does not know what her little sister is talking about. Apparently, not everybody could see the tree. Mallory decides to tell her that it was probably a nightmare. Later, she and Ben are saying their goodbyes and kiss each other. Then Mallory goes in a boat with a bunch of kids to teach them how to navigate. Before leaving, Mallory gives a flower to Ben, and when he is in the car he realizes that it was a plastic flower, so it could not decay, apparently when the creature haunted a place all the flowers decayed. He is visibly shocked, and the last scene shows Mallory away from the marina in the boat with the kids. She is staring without any facial expression to the camera while the kids are talking to each other, oblivious to her behavior.

City of Life and Death is set in 1937, shortly after the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Imperial Japanese Army has just captured Nanjing (or Nanking), capital of the Republic of China. What followed is historically known as the Nanking Massacre, a period of several weeks wherein massive numbers of Chinese prisoners-of-war and civilians were killed by the Japanese military.After some commanders of the National Revolutionary Army flee Nanking, a Chinese soldier Lieutenant Lu Jianxiong (Liu Ye) and his comrade-in-arms Shunzi (Gao Yuanyuan) attempt to stop a group of deserting troops from leaving the city, but as they exit the gates, they are captured by Japanese forces that have surrounded the city.As the Japanese comb the city for enemy forces, Superior Private (later Sergeant) Kadokawa Masao (Nakaizumi Hideo) and his men are attacked by Lu Jianxiong and a small unit of both regular and non-regular soldiers, who fire at them from buildings. Lu and his companions are eventually forced to surrender as more Japanese troops arrive. The Chinese prisoners-of-war are systematically escorted to various locations to be mass executed. Shunzi and a boy called Xiaodouzi (Liu Bin) survive the shootings and they flee to the Nanking Safety Zone, run by the German businessman and Nazi Party member John Rabe (John Paisley) and other Westerners. Thousands of Chinese women, children, elderly men and wounded soldiers take refuge in this safety zone. However, the zone is forcefully entered several times by bands of Japanese soldiers intent on making sexual advances on female refugees. Due to the repeated intrusions, the women are urged to cut their hair and dress like men to protect themselves from being raped. A prostitute called Xiaojiang (Jiang Yiyan) refuses to do so, saying that she needs to keep her hair in order to earn a living.Meanwhile, Kadokawa develops feelings for a Japanese prostitute named Yuriko (Miyamoto Yuko), and struggles to come to terms with the omnipresent violence around him with his own conflicting impulses. Despite his feelings of alienation, Kadokawa brings Yuriko candy and gifts from Japan, and promises to marry her after the war.Rabe's secretary Tang Tianxiang (Miyamoto Yuko) and a teacher named Jiang Shuyun manage the daily operations of the safety zone. Even though he is in a privileged position, Tang is still unable to protect his young daughter from being thrown out of a window by a Japanese soldier, and his sister-in-law from being raped. When the Japanese officer Second Lieutenant Ida Osamu (Kohata Ryu) demands that the refugees provide 100 women to serve as "comfort women", Rabe and Jiang tearfully make the announcement to the community. Xiaojiang and others volunteer themselves, hoping that their sacrifice would save the refugees.Kadokawa meets Xiaojiang and brings her rice but witnesses another soldier raping her as she lies almost lifeless. Later, many "comfort women", including Xiaojiang, die from the abuse, and Kadokawa sees their naked bodies being taken away. Kadokawa feels further estranged when he witnesses Ida shooting Tang's sister-in-law May, who has become insane.Rabe receives an order to return to Germany because his activities in the safety zone are detrimental to diplomatic ties between his country and Japan. Tang and his wife are allowed to leave Nanking with Rabe. However Tang changes his mind at the last moment and trades places with a Chinese soldier pretending to be Rabe's assistant, saying that he wants to stay behind to find May. Mrs Tang (Qin Lan) reveals that she is pregnant before bidding her husband farewell. Not long after Rabe left, Ida has Tang executed by firing squad.The Japanese disband the safety zone and start hunting for Chinese men who were previously soldiers, promising that these men would find work and receive pay if they turn themselves in. However, men deemed to be soldiers are huddled into trucks and sent for execution. Shunzi, who survived the earlier mass killings, is physically checked and initially deemed to be a non-combatant, but is later recognized by a Japanese soldier and brought onto a truck as well.After Minnie Vautrin (Beverly Peckous) and other Westerners plead with the Japanese, Ida permits each refugee to choose only one man from the trucks to be saved. Jiang Shuyun rescues a man, pretending to be his wife, and then returns for Shunzi (Zhao Yisui), claiming that he is her husband, while Xiaodouzi acts as their son. Kadokawa sees through Jiang's ruse but does not expose her. Despite this, another Japanese soldier points her out to Ida and the three of them are captured. Shunzi is taken away again, this time together with Xiaodouzi. Jiang, knowing that she will be raped, asks Kadokawa to kill her. He grants her her wish and shoots her, much to his comrades' surprise.Afterwards, Kadokawa looks for Yuriko and learns that she has died after leaving Nanking. He says that she was his wife and requests that she be given a proper funeral. As the Japanese perform a dance-ritual to celebrate their conquest of Nanking and honor their war dead, Kadokawa reveals his emotional turmoil over what he has done and witnessed.Kadokawa and another Japanese soldier march Shunzi and Xiaodouzi out of town to be executed, but to their surprise, Kadokawa releases them instead. Kadokawa tells the other soldier, "Life is more difficult than death." The soldier bows to show his respect for Kadokawa's decision and walks away. Kadokawa then weeps before shooting himself to escape from his guilt.In the end credits, it is revealed that Mrs Tang lived into old age, as did Ida Osamu, and that Xiaodouzi is still alive today.
