New York based writer Gwen Cummings knows that she drinks a lot but doesn't believe it's a problem, and if she decides that it is an issue that she could stop drinking on her own. She and her live-in boyfriend Jasper fuel each other's hyperactivity with this excessive alcohol consumption, "a normal life" is not in either's vocabulary. Between Gwen and her older straight-laced sister Lily, Gwen more closely resembles their larger than life mother, who was also an alcoholic and who died because of that when they were children. Lily believes that Gwen's addictions makes her a difficult if not impossible person to love. While Gwen is in a drunken stupor at Lily's wedding, Gwen causes one issue after another, ruining the day for Lily. Gwen is forced to examine her drinking with the culmination of bad events she caused at the wedding, leading to her being court ordered to enter into rehab or jail for twenty-eight days, which is only marginally more tolerable an idea to her than the alternative, which is jail. For Gwen to make any progress, she has to acknowledge that she has a problem which requires the support during those twenty-eight days not only of the facility's staff, but also the other patients, each who is going through his/her own issue with respect to the demons of addiction. If she does eventually acknowledge the problem, she will also have to reconcile the events of her life with Lily, and come to the realization that a life with Jasper is not in her best interest if she has any chance of surviving outside of the facility after those twenty-eight days.—Huggo

Alex and Lucy talk about having a child, but they both agree that it's not a good time to do that. It quickly devolves into a fight, because he feels that he's let her down. It's his birthday, and she gives him a necklace. On his way home, Alex is stabbed repeatedly and dies in the street. Credits roll.He wakes up in what looks like a home lab. His arm is made of various pieces sewn together. He gets out of bed and looks at himself in the mirror. He is a collection of spare parts. Henry comes in and looks really surprised, then he names the created man Adam. Henry shows Adam around and tells him he wants to keep Adam safe. Adam still dreams about his life as Alex.He has to take various drugs, including one that keeps him alive. Henry tries to teach Adam various things, but Adam is in his own little world of memories. Eventually, they figure out that music helps Adam learn. His education proceeds quickly after that.We get Henry's backstory about being a doctor in Afghanistan and some of what he did over there, and his decision put people together back home. Henry's girlfriend, Liz, stops by and talks to Adam. She claims Henry has PTSD, but he denies it.We also meet Polidori, who came up with the magic drug, and he expects to become rich and famous because of it. Polidori's rich girlfriend Shelley is there too.Henry is starting to have second thoughts about the whole thing. Polidori takes Adam outside to see the museum. He shows him different kinds of weapons exhibits and erotic paintings and he points out that humanity is "utterly depraved." They run into Lucy, Alex's former girlfriend. She doesn't recognize him at all, but he has a spark of recognition.Henry discontinues Adam's medication, something that Polidori specifically warned Adam about. Henry gives Adam his old necklace back. Then he finds some videos that explain far more than Adam really wanted to know. Adam angrily tells Henry he knows what he did and then he storms out. They all look for Adam. Adam meets a pretty blonde in a bar who likes him despite his weirdness, but when they pass by the lab as she lets him walk her home, he wants her to come in and play ping pong and gets too aggressive,and it scares her. He grabs her and covers her mouth and accidentally chokes her to death. Henry comes back sometime later and finds them hiding in and out of the alley. They get the girl in the lab and Adam wants Henry to revive her and make her his girlfriend but Henry says she's been dead too long. He and Adam get in a fight and he stabs at him in the neck with a needle and Adam collapses. Liz shows up when they drive the dead girl and Adam to the woods Polidori's house bury them there. They go to Polidori's house well he and Shelly are entertaining her rich parents. Once her parents leave, they tell him what happened and he says they should stay overnight and then go back clean everything out of the lab tomorrow. Unfortunately for them, Adam is revived and broken out of the grave comes into the house and kills Liz in front of the horrified Henry. They fight and Henry says Polidori is the one Adam should want revenge on.Polidori has heard the stuff went armed himself. He and Shelley finally this is dead body and she says her parents were right and that he is rotten and she's calling the police.Polidori probably shoots her in the head and finds Henry and says he should thank him because he not only procured some of the bodies he actually killed some for Henry, apparently including Alex. Henry and Adam and Polidori end up in a struggle which ends with Henry shot and dying in Adam's arms. Polidori says Adam is the one who be playing for all this and sets the house on fire leaving Adam there to burn, but Adam escapes, smashes into Polidori's car, pulls him out of it stuffed pills down his throat and throws him over a bridge screaming to his death. Henry pointed out earlier Adam is not in the system. He has no fingerprints and officially never existed,but you still ends up running through the woods the next day from a pack of police dogs. That afternoon, he makes it to the city and ask Lucy's necklace delivered to her. She asks who delivered it and her co-worker said it was a weird looking guy. She races outside looking for Alex but doesn't see him and doesn't recognize Adam because he doesn't really look like Alex. Adam looks at her from the street,and then turns and walks away into the crowd,his back to her

1957. Long having retired, James Whale, arguably most famous for directing Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935) among some other 1930s horror classics, has burned his bridges with the Hollywood community in that they have abandoned him, the possible exception being his continuing friendship with former lover David Lewis. James had been openly gay even during his working period and is in declining health. Having been recently released from a hospital where he was recuperating from a stroke, he left with some permanent health issues, the aftermath of the stroke. Much against the disapproval of his loyal longtime housekeeper Hanna, his health does not prevent him from toying with the handsome young men who may wander into his midst in his continuing homosexual desires, although Hanna is as much, if not more concerned about any of those young men taking advantage of him in his elderly and fragile state. The young man who catches his eye among the most recent is Clayton Boone, who Hanna had hired to do garden work around the property. Clay, an ex-marine from the proverbial "wrong side of the tracks", has no idea who James was or is before he starts this job. James and Clay soon begin a friendship of sorts. Clay is also unaware of James' homosexual orientation before such is confirmed by Hanna, an issue which threatens his masculinity, especially in light of the cracks showing in his casual sexual relationship with a slightly older and wiser diner waitress named Betty. Clay has to reconcile that threat against being in the company of someone whom he considers an interesting and once famous man. The friendship and his state of health related to the stroke lead James to reflect in a bittersweet vein on key points of his life, most notably serving in WWI, and as a result reveals his ulterior motives through the actions he takes toward Clay.—Huggo

Andula works on the floor of a shoe factory in the provincial Czechoslovakian town of Zruc, and like most of her colleagues is young and female - the age and gender disparity due to conscription sending the young men into the military - and lives in the factory's hostel. She is somewhat innocent and naive when it comes to issues with the opposite sex, she easily falling in love or infatuation, such as with her current boyfriend Tonda, or reliving thoughts about a brief non-sexual encounter with a forest ranger. To boost morale among his young, female employees, the factory manager arranges for a social between them and a group of military reservists. While the social progresses to a point where it seems that she, and her two friends, Jana and Marie, are going to go off with three older and in their minds not really desirable reservists, Andula instead is whisked off by Milda, the Prague-based pianist who was playing with the musical combo at the social and who could witness the goings-on from his unique vantage point. While Andula doesn't totally trust Milda, she does end up spending the night with him. What is purely pillow talk on Milda's part, Andula takes as gospel. As such in combination with a talk to all the girls by their housemother, Andula unilaterally makes the decision to head to Prague to reunite with Milda, in the process she getting a life lesson about sexual relations among the young.—Huggo
